Flag of Georgia

State Flag: The original Georgia state flag was made up of the states coat of arms on a field of blue, and adopted in 1799. Post Reconstruction brought changes of a vertical stripe and horizontal bands of red and white. In 1905, the state coat of arms was added. This flag remained until 1956 when the Confederate flag was incorporated. This change, said its defenders, was intended to honor Confederate soldiers. However, many felt is affirmed segregation. Due to events in 1987 by supremacist groups in Forsyth County, there were many groups which lobbied for a return to the pre-1956 flag. In 1992, then Governor Zell Miller announced that he would support the change. However, it was not until January 30, 2001 that the Georgia flag was changed to its current look.
