Georgia Authors

Here are more of Georgia's favorite writers. Some are new writers making their name in the pages of Georgia history and some have passed. We hope that you'll support the living writers by buying and sharing their works and offering an occasional kind word of encouragement, and that you'll remember those that have preserved our culture in stories.

Lewis Grizzard

1946 – 1994
Lewis Grizzard grew up in Moreland, Georgia, just outside of Newnan, and graduated from Newnan High School. He worked as a reporter while attending the University of Georgia and after college started a column in 1977 for the Atlanta Constitution. His columns were syndicated and often used in his many books. Most of Grizzards writing was humorous and discussed growing up and living in the South. He died at the young age of 47 from heart failure. He’s remembered today at a museum in his hometown of Moreland.

Celestine Sibley

1914 - 1999
Celestine Sibley worked at the Atlanta Constitution from 1941 until 1999 as a reporter and a columnist. Her columns on Southern culture were read and enjoyed warmly, and with almost 30 books published she established herself as one of Georgia's most beloved writers.

As a newspaperwoman Sibley covered politics, corruption, and high-profile trials. In the 1950s she covered Hollywood and even sold True Crime stories. After this she began publishing books in many genres. Sibley is best remembered for her columns and worked until just before her death from cancer.

Anne Rivers Siddons

Siddons is a great author and a favorite of other authors like Terry Kay and Pat Conroy, who both recommend her books. She really is a hidden gem in the Southern literary world. Even though she’s had great success with her many books she still hasn’t been recognized for the amazing talent she truly is. Anne Rivers Siddons writes about the South and especially the Atlanta and Charleston areas. While most books are marketed to women she also offers great stories for the other sex, especially her horror book The House Next Door.
