Dahlonega, Georgia

If you head an hour north on GA400 & US 19, you will come to Dahlonega, home of America’s first gold rush. In 1828, Benjamen Parks found gold in its hills, and before long thousands came looking for fortune. When you visit Dahlonega, you and your family will find the county courthouse, the oldest in Georgia and home to the Gold Museum, a pleasurable way to spend a few hours. The museum stands in the town square partly surrounded by balconied 19th century buildings. While at the museum, you can see dioramas of mining gear, weights and measures, panning tools and even some gold.

Should you wish to try your hand at “striking it rich”, then be sure to visit Crisson Mine, Consolidated Mine or Smith House. Here you can, for a modest fee, pan for gold. However, you can mine for free in the streams on public lands like the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Should plan your visit to Dahlonega for the third weekend in October, you can take part in the Gold Rush Day’s activities. The fun includes a parade, complete with a king and queen, mountain music, crafts, panning for gold and unique contest like pig calling or a Liars Competition.

If you enjoy the water, be sure to check out the river trips along the Chestatee. You can contact Appalachian Outfitters (706-864-7175) for availability and rates.

Dahlonega Lodging

Dahlonega offers a number of places to stay, all with the southern charm you expect to find. The Smith House, located t 84 S. Chestatee Street, is a Victorian farmhouse that has been a favorite for over 75 years. The Smith House, purported to sit on a vein of gold, is conveniently just off the town square. Just 10 minutes outside of Dahlonega, you willfind Blueberry Inn and Gardens. The Inn is a 1920’s farmhouse which has a great view of the mountains and, yes you can pick blueberries! Another notableaccommodation is the Mountain Top Lodge. Here you can enjoy a 360* view of the mountains during the winter and early spring. Other times of the year the view is slightly obstructed by the pines, oaks, and numerous dogwoods. The rooms are tastefully furnished and the sturdy yet rustic architecture offers a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

Best Places to Eat in Dahlonega
