Do you prefer a vacation where peace and tranquility is
the main objective? If so, you will find your niche on Cumberland
Island. Cumberland, the largest of the coastal islands,
is managed by the National Park Service and protected for
its historical and natural features. Like Georgia's other
islands, Cumberland has beaches, natural communities and
lots of history. However, to protect these resources, only
a limited number of visitors may be on the island at any
one time. To reach the island, one must take the ferry boat,
The Cumberland Queen, which is docked
in St. Marys. (Reservations are recommended and a fee is
charged.) The ferry boat ride is approximately 45 minutes
long and the passengers see a variety of sights. Depending
on the day and season, you could see shrimp boats, the dorsal
fins of bottled nose dolphins, or wild horses. Once on the
island, you can enjoy the walking paths in the historic
Dungeness area of the Revolutionary War, touring the Ice
House Museum or visit the property owned by Thomas Carnegie
and his family.
If you love getting back to nature, stay on the ferry until
it reaches Sea Camp. From here you can rent a bicycle at
the ferry deck or enjoy hiking trails and camping. Just
be sure to bring all your gear, don't forget to include
sunscreen and bug repellent, food and supplies as there
are no stores on the island.
